The “Green Passport” is considered an entrance test in Gastro, Hotels and Co. In a special session on Wednesday, the National Council passed the legal basis for the “Green Passport”. But how does it work?

The “Green Pass” will be implemented from June 4 either as a PDF document or via QR code. This was officially decided by the Austrian Parliament on Wednesday. The “Green Passport” will be used wherever proof of 3G compliance is required – for example in the catering industry or in tourism.

However, a QR code on the smartphone is not mandatory, alternatively there will also be a PDF that can be printed out. Minister of Health Wolfgang Mückstein emphasized that other written evidence will also continue to be recognized when visiting a restaurant.

Now many people are asking themselves how they can get this “green passport” in the first place and what is needed for it. We are bringing you a summarize of the most important points and open questions.

  • The Green Passport is an umbrella term for the simple, secure and verifiable proof of a Corona vaccination, a passed through infection with SARS-CoV-2 or a negative test result. Each of these certificates will have a unique QR code that will be the basis for verification by the respective authorized body, making it a ticket to restaurant, hotels, movie theater or gym.
  • These certificates can be easily stored on electronic devices. In order to retrieve the certificates digitally, a cell phone signature (Handy Signatur) or citizen card (Bürgerkarte) is required, which should therefore be applied for in a timely manner.
  • Pharmacies now also offer the option for a printout of the e-vaccination passport as proof of immunization.
  • A printout of the entry of the completed Corona vaccination in the electronic vaccination passport can be made via a login on the Gesundheit.gv.at site under the button “Login ELGA”. A cell phone signature or citizen card is required to access the ELGA portal. The printout of the vaccination certificate in the electronic vaccination certificate can also be created in pdf format and then conveniently saved and carried, e.g., on the cell phone.
  • The citizen card/mobile phone signature can also be activated conveniently from home via FinanzOnline.
  • There will be no mandatory use of the digitally and analogously available certificates with QR code. It will still be possible to use the previously common paper certificates such as a certificate of segregation or the vaccination certificate. However, for inspecting bodies, for example in hotels or cultural institutions, scanning a QR code is easier and faster than checking a completed document.
  • The Corona vaccination is recorded via the electronic vaccination certificate. So the vaccination does not need to be entered into the passport itself.
  • All stored certificates can be presented either digitally or in printed form in combination with a photo ID. In addition, the documents that have been used up to now also remain valid.
  • The checker (in the restaurant, cinema, gym) scans the QR code with the cell phone camera and sees by means of a check app whether a valid immunity certificate is present or not. This check is also possible in the private sector.
